Q tip in baby's nose?

My son often has snot in his nose in the morning and he has a hard time breathing through his nose. I have been using saline drops and the bulb suctioner, but he hates it! And I hate doing it. I feel like it's almost abusive...like, he trusts me so much, then I do this horrible thing to him, then I hug him and tell him I'm sorry and it's ok. I know this isn't actually abuse, but it just doesn't feel right to me.... there must be a better way!

I've tried Vicks baby rub, I've tried having him in the bathroom when I have a hot shower (for the steam) but those things don't seem to help too much.

I asked a friend about what she does, and she said she puts a Q tip in her baby's nose and the baby doesn't mind at all. I'm just wondering.... is this safe?
